HISTORY

In the wake of the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco seized an opportunity to showcase its resilience. In 1910, visionary business and civic leaders gathered to propose hosting the century’s first great world fair, celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal.

In just two hours, $4 million ( $120M-$130M at today’s value) was raised and San Francisco beat competitors like New Orleans and Washington, D.C. to host the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

The crown jewel of this grand exhibition was the Palace of Fine Arts, a masterpiece by California architect Bernard Maybeck. Inspired by a Piranesi engraving depicting a Roman ruin reflected in a pool, Maybeck created a structure that embodied “the mortality of grandeur and the vanity of human wishes.”

Though initially intended for demolition after the fair, like many of its counterparts, the Palace of Fine Arts defied its temporary fate—and the rest, as they say, is history.
